The 2025 Workshop on "Trade, Regulation, and Academic Insights for the Next Generation" (TRAIN) kicked off in Shenzhen on December 8 to focus on global trade and economic policies.
Jointly organized by the Academy of Mathematics and Systems Science (AMSS) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the University of International Business and Economics (UIBE), the 2025 TRAIN Workshop was hosted by UIBE Shenzhen Institute / Institute of International Trade Rules.

As one of the workshop chairs, Robert Koopman, former Chief Economist of the World Trade Organization (WTO), underscored three key themes that stood out to him in his opening remarks.
The first is how trade policy and regulations shape firm behavior in global markets. The second theme is institutions and information as factors influencing the behavior of economic agents under regulation. The third theme is risk, resilience, and measurement, which are closely related to his own work.

Yang Cuihong, Vice President of AMSS of CAS, noted that the main purpose of the workshop is to enhance the academic links and collaboration between Chinese scholars and the global economic research community.
She regarded the workshop as a valuable opportunity for young researchers, including PhD candidates and master's students, to communicate with celebrated scholars in related research areas. It is an excellent chance to gain insights and feedback.

Zhao Zhongxiu delivers his opening remarks in Shenzhen on Dec. 8, 2025.
Zhao Zhongxiu, president of UIBE, highlighted that given the significant changes in China's and the global economy, it is important for scholars to examine these issues with an open mind, to listen to different perspectives, and to work together toward a deeper understanding of the world economy.
According to him, first launched in 2024, TRAIN aims to strengthen the link between academic research and policy discussions and to encourage communication and collaboration across different generations of scholars.

Tu Xinquan, Dean of the China Institute for WTO Studies at UIBE, delivers his lecture in Shenzhen on Dec. 8, 2025.
After the opening remarks from the three chairs of the workshop, scholars from renowned universities in China and abroad delivered lectures and presentations on issues of trade, innovation, immigration, and more.
