In Yun'an District, Yunfu City, Guangdong Province, a quiet fishing village is undergoing a poetic transformation. Known as the "Maldives of Yunfu", Wanbian Village (湾边村) has evolved from an ordinary riverside settlement into a popular travel destination, welcoming 1 million visitors in 2025.
Unlike many tourist spots built almost overnight, Wanbian Village has grown from its own roots. It all began when early visitors were drawn to its golden sunsets and sandy shores. Realizing its potential as a tourist destination, the village began a gradual process of renewal guided by a simple but meaningful "contract" among different stakeholders.
The appeal of Wanbian Village lies in the consensus and division of labor among the local government, the village collective and the residents. Instead of pursuing large-scale reconstruction, the local government focused on improving infrastructure, building roads and enhancing access for outdoor enthusiasts. Rather than outsourcing the entire village to external developers, the village collective allowed modern renovations to coexist with traditional village life. Residents opened local diners serving fresh river food and turned their homes into cozy guesthouses.
Suggestions and even criticism from social media have also been treated as valuable resources for improvement. This cycle of public demand, local response and tourist feedback has made the village's offerings increasingly diverse and vibrant.
Today, Wanbian Village retains its authentic daily life while offering public spaces and rich cultural activities. It welcomes visitors from around the world to this riverside gem, where they can experience Yunfu's distinctive charm.
