World's largest cross-sectional power cable put into operation in Shantou

The transmission project for the Datang Shantou Nan'ao Lemen I Offshore Wind Power Expansion Project in Shantou, Guangdong, was energized and put into operation on July 25, marking the commercial use of the world's first 3,500-square-millimeter smooth aluminum-sheathed power cable. The cable has the largest cross-sectional area of its kind in the world.

Compared with conventional cables, the new cable offers greater current-carrying capacity, better heat dissipation, stronger water-blocking and sealing performances and greater operational stability, significantly enhancing the capacity and efficiency of high-voltage power transmission.

Before the transmission project went live, all 27 turbines at the expanded wind farm had been installed, but limited outbound transmission capacity prevented them from operating at their full potential. The new transmission line removes the bottleneck, allowing more offshore wind power to reach the grid.

The project is expected to strengthen the reliability and efficiency of offshore wind grid integration and offer a practical, replicable model for similar renewable energy projects across China.
