Macau International Airport's Hengqin front cargo facility officially breaks ground

The groundbreaking ceremony for the Macau International Airport Hengqin front cargo facility was held on October 28, marking the official commencement of construction for a key project essential to the deep integration of transport and logistics between Macao and Hengqin.

The project is scheduled for completion by the end of 2026 and is expected to begin operations in the first half of 2027. Upon completion, its estimated annual air cargo handling capacity will reach 300,000 metric tons.

By relocating the cargo terminal functions of Macau International Airport to Hengqin, the facility will enable seamless air logistics connectivity between Macao and Hengqin, establishing a new logistics hub for the region and further enhancing the modern logistics system of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA).

The project covers a total site area of approximately 66,700 square meters, with a total floor area of about 97,600 square meters, including one logistics warehouse, one comprehensive office building, and supporting facilities.

The project extends key air cargo service chains of Macau International Airport—including security screening, pallet building, and cargo distribution—to Hengqin. Simultaneously, by leveraging the customs and border inspection measures in Hengqin, it creates a seamless connection between Macau International Airport and the Hengqin cargo facility, enabling rapid interconnectivity for goods shipment between Guangdong and Macao.

This aims to create a differentiated competitive advantage, strengthen the air logistics channel for economic and trade cooperation between China and Portuguese-speaking countries, and promote the development of Macao as an air cargo hub while diversifying Macao's economy.

Upon completion, the project will effectively streamline key links in the regional logistics chain between Macao and Hengqin, promoting the in-depth integration and connectivity of logistics, commercial flow, and information flow between Macao, Hengqin, and the wider GBA, establishing an "air corridor" for industrial synergy and commercial exchanges, particularly for high-end manufacturing, cross-border e-commerce, biomedicine, and other sectors.
