Latin American journalists walk on Huangmaohai Link and praise China's infrastructure

From December 1 to 4, 22 journalists from 18 Latin American countries, including Brazil, Chile, Argentina, and other countries, visited Guangdong and participated in the 2024 Understanding China Conference.

On December 2, they walked on the Huangmaohai Link and Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link to experience the achievements of China's infrastructure. As the first group of foreign guests on the Huangmaohai Link, they were given an introduction to the bridge with the sunset.

Huangmaohai Link, starting from Pingsha town, Zhuhai, and terminating at Doushan town of Taishan city, Jiangmen, is the western extension of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge. It has a total length of approximately 31 km, of which the over-sea length is approximately 14 km. The construction commenced in June 2020 and is scheduled to be opened to traffic in December 2024.

Maria Sanhueza, a Chilean journalist, marvelled at China's infrastructural achievements and said, “We have a big gap when it comes to infrastructure. Although we have a lot of natural resources, it's a similar situation to Africa. We cannot export them so easily or in their due time.” She exclaimed that China has to offer Latin America what no other superpower has to offer. The investment in the infrastructure sector is what Latin America needs the most.

Paladino, a Brazilian journalist, recorded the day's journey with a mobile phone lens and posted it on TikTok. He described the close relationship and trade between Brazil and China in the steel and mining sectors, as well as cultural exchanges in addition to commercial trade. Many countries in Latin America have also joined the Belt and Road Initiative.

He believes that the programme in which he is participating, the Latin American Journalists in China Exchange Programme, is also an important symbol of the partnership between China and Latin America.

“We are privileged to get to know not just Beijing, but other provinces as well. So I think the relations are at the best level that they have ever been. It will only grow stronger in the next years, and the partnership between China and Brazil is also getting stronger than ever.”

They also visited Guangzhou Daily and Jinan University for in-depth exchanges with Chinese media professionals and scholars. They discussed with journalists from Guangzhou Daily about China-Latin American media cooperation and the difficulties and challenges that the media face together, learning from each other's experiences. At Jinan University, they exchanged views with professors from the College of Journalism and Communication on the close contact between Chinese universities and Latin American countries.
