Some sharp-eyed local foodies have noticed green mangoes hanging from trees lining many streets in Yunfu, South China's Guangdong Province.
However, these roadside mangoes grow in environments exposed to car exhaust, dust, and other pollutants all year round. They may contain excessive levels of heavy metals, pesticide residues, and other harmful substances, making them absolutely inedible.
While these roadside mangoes are inedible, Yunfu is currently in the midst of its "sweet season" with an abundance of fresh fruits. The fresh fruits are ripening across the city, bringing a sweet summer.
Lychee: Renowned as the crown jewel of Lingnan, lychees boast large, plump fruits that resemble ruby-red gems dangling from the branches. Their translucent flesh, pure as jade, is tender yet crisp.
Baishi watermelon: Hidden beneath leafy vines, Baishi watermelon is a true summer treasure for staying refreshed. Bursting with a rich, fruity aroma, its crimson flesh is juicy, crisp, and delightfully tender.
Yunan wampee: With its golden peel and crystal-clear flesh, this subtly sour fruit is both refreshing and invigorating. Slightly sour with a lingering aftertaste, it is perfect for cooling down in the summer heat.
Jinhuang Mango: Nicknamed the "fruit pudding" of mangoes, this plump variety features thick, velvety, low-fiber flesh bursting with tropical sweetness.
Sunshine rose grapes: Glistening like amber in the sunlight, these grapes carry a delicate rose fragrance and a tender, jelly-like bite. They are sweet, refreshing, and utterly irresistible.
Loquat: Golden and plump, loquats are the honeyed jewels of nature. Peeling back the thin skin releases a tangy-sweet aroma that fills the air. Their juicy flesh quenches thirst, cools the body, and soothes the summer heat.
Pineapple: With golden, juicy flesh and a rich tropical aroma, pineapples have a velvety texture and a bright, sweet-tart flavor.
Mulberries: These tiny berries are rich in anthocyanins. Their tangy-sweet fruits, resembling clusters of purple gems, adorn the branches.
Lemon: With a fresh, natural aroma from the forest, these lemons add a refreshing note to hot summer days. The authentic perfume lemon is prized for its intense fragrance, large size, and seedless flesh, offering pure citrus bliss in every bite.
Dragon Fruit: With vibrant red skin and jewel-toned flesh, dragon fruit is as striking as it is delicious. Its creamy, mildly sweet pulp melts in your mouth like a refreshing sorbet. It is juicy and cool, a perfect treat for sweltering days.
