Jieyang Ancient City unveils cultural holiday experience for May Day holiday

Jieyang Ancient City will host a diverse lineup of cultural events throughout the May Day holiday, blending intangible cultural heritage performances, immersive cultural & art experiences, and interactive activities for visitors.

From April 29 to May 5, the ancient city will offer a rich program designed to showcase Lingnan traditions, local cuisine, and historic charm. Day and night events will run continuously, allowing travelers to explore local alleys, enjoy specialty foods, and engage with its cultural heritage.

Intangible Cultural Heritage performances

- Green Lion Dance: A national-level intangible cultural heritage performance 

Dates: May 1–5, 3:00–3:45 PM & 8:30–9:00 PM  

Location: Green Lion Cultural Tourism Area

- Jiedong District heritage showcase: Traditional folk performances from Jiedong  

Dates: May 1–3, 3:00–5:00 PM  

Location: "Charm of Jiedong" Pavilion

- Guqin concert: Classical Chinese string music  

Date: May 2, 9:00–11:00 AM  

Location: Ding Richang Memorial Hall, West Studio

- Chaozhou Opera performances: A public benefit opera series 

Dates: May 1, 3, 4, and 5, 3:30 PM  

Location: Ding Richang Memorial Hall and other venues

- Iron stick puppetry: A national-level intangible heritage puppet show  

Dates: May 1, 3, and 5, 7:30 PM  

Location: Stage of Ancient Banyan Martial Temple 

 

Art and cultural exhibitions

- Paper-cutting art exhibition: Featuring works by artist Xie Yanshan  

Dates: April 30–June 20  

Location: Jieyang Confucius Temple, Zunjing Pavilion

- Female artists invitational painting exhibition: Titled "Alley Life, Ancient City Charm"  

Dates: Through May 5, 2026  

Location: West Lake Art Museum, Rongcheng District

- Ancient stone rubbings exhibition: Second edition showcasing "古城" epigraphic rubbings  

Dates: Through May 15, 2026  

Location: Bailanshan Pavilion

 

Immersive cultural experiences

- Paper-cutting workshop: Hands-on heritage craft experience  

Date: May 1, 3:00 PM  

Location: Jieyang Confucius Temple, Zunjing Pavilion

- Calligraphy and painting training: A public benefit class for children  

Date: May 3, 9:30–11:00 AM  

Location: Jieyang Confucius Temple, Education Office

- Pine needle pendant crafting: Creative workshop using pine needles  

Date: May 5, 10:00 AM  

Location: Ding's Guanglu Temple, Guangdong Book Bar
