Xizang-Guangdong UHV DC power transmission project starts construction

On September 16, the Xizang-Guangdong ±800 kilovolt ultra-high voltage direct current (UHV DC) power transmission project commenced construction, as announced at a mobilization conference held in Guangzhou.

The operation and maintenance personnel conduct a final survey and exploration for transmission line routing in Eryuan County, Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province.

The transmission line will span approximately 2,681 kilometers across the Xizang Autonomous Region, Yunnan Province, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, and Guangdong Province, with a rated transmission capacity of 10 gigawatts. It is the world's most advanced flexible DC transmission project, boasting the highest transmission capacity and the largest investment scale.

Once operational in 2029, the Southeast Xizang clean energy base will deliver over 43 billion kWh of electricity to the load center of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA), entirely powered by clean energy, replacing about 12 million tons of standard coal equivalent and reducing nearly 33 million tons of carbon emissions.

The total investment in the project is approximately 53.2 billion yuan (nearly 7.5 billion U.S. dollars), while investment in power station infrastructure will exceed 150 billion yuan (nearly 21 billion U.S. dollars). At its peak, construction is expected to create over 100,000 jobs, providing a significant boost to Xizang's economic development.

Dong Yanle, deputy general manager of the Department of Engineering Construction of China Southern Power Grid Co., Ltd. and chairman of the Xizang-Guangdong UHV DC Power Co., Ltd., stated that the project will drive innovation across the industrial chain by independently developing a complete set of UHV core equipment suitable for ultra-high-altitude power projects.
