Despite a spring shower on March 3, historic Chaozhou in South China's Guangdong Province staged a flash mob of traditional lanterns and Hanfu, blending ancient Chinese romance with the modern city.
The celebration began at the former residence of Ming dynasty Confucian scholar Tang Boyuan (唐伯元). Over 20 Hanfu enthusiasts dressed in Tang, Song, and Ming attire paraded through iconic Paifang Street, carrying handcrafted lanterns inspired by the classic Chaozhou opera Chen San and Wu Niang (《陈三五娘》). Lantern designs were symbolic: Ao fish for success, crabs for wealth, and rolling balls for overflowing fortune.

At the City God Cultural Museum square (潮州城隍民俗文化馆广场), the sound of drums cut through the rain, marking the start of traditional riddle-guessing, a festival favorite. Chaozhou added a local twist, with riddles inspired by landmarks, snacks, and folk customs. Successful participants won creative cultural souvenirs, including Fulou Monkey (府楼猴) merchandise.
"It's my first time seeing riddles with drumming," said Mr. Cao, a tourist from Guangzhou. "Even though I didn't guess them all, learning Chaozhou slang was surprisingly fun."

Despite the rain, the lantern parade's ancient charm and the lively riddle games kept the festive spirit alive all night.
