Hailstorms, rainstorms, and strong winds! Guangdong braces for severe weather as holiday return rush peaks

Guangdong is experiencing unsettled weather, with hailstorms, heavy rainfall, and gusty winds affecting the region. As of 3:37 pm on May 4, Guangdong has issued nine orange alerts for heavy rain, 15 yellow alerts for rainstorms, two orange alerts for thunderstorms and strong winds, and six orange alerts for hail.

The provincial meteorological bureau forecasts that such weather conditions will persist into May 7. Traffic authorities predict a peak in travel on May 5, the final day of the May Day holiday, with an estimated 9.02 million vehicles expected on the roads. The public is advised to prioritize safety, especially during the ongoing severe weather conditions.

From May 4 to 5, northern Guangdong and the Pearl River Delta will face heavy rain, possible storms, and gusty winds of levels 7 to 9. Maximum temperatures will range from 25°C to 28°C in the north, 32°C to 34°C on the Leizhou Peninsula, and 28°C to 32°C elsewhere.

On May 6, moderate to heavy rain with localized downpours will affect western parts of the Pearl River Delta and Yangjiang, while other areas will see cloudy skies with scattered showers. Maximum temperatures will range from 27°C to 31°C across most regions.

On May 7, central and northern areas will experience thunderstorms with local heavy rain, while the rest of the province will see cloudy conditions with isolated showers. Temperatures will peak between 26°C and 28°C in northern Guangdong and 31°C to 34°C in the south.

Five rainfall events expected in May

The meteorological authorities have recently released the climate trend forecast for May. According to the latest predictions, Guangdong is expected to experience five significant rainfall events this month:

May 4–5: Moderate to heavy rain, with localized areas seeing torrential or extremely heavy rainfall.

May 9–11: Heavy to torrential rain, with some areas experiencing extremely heavy rainfall.

May 15–16: Moderate to heavy rain, with isolated torrential downpours.

May 20–23: Heavy to torrential rain.

May 27–29: Moderate to heavy rain.
