Guangzhou is mourning the peaceful passing of Ah Hang (阿杭), a celebrity white lion. Known for his viral "straight bangs" and gentle demeanor, he captured the hearts of millions across China. The beloved 17-year-old feline passed away peacefully on July 14, marking the end of an 11-year residency at the Guangzhou Zoo that left an indelible mark on the city.

Born in 2009, the rare leucistic African lion was relocated from Hangzhou to Guangzhou in 2015, where he earned the affectionate name "Ah Hang." Despite his majestic stature as a male lion, he was renowned for his exceptionally gentle temperament.
Ah Hang shot to nationwide internet fame in 2022 after visitors captured images of his unique, naturally formed straight bangs. The perfectly aligned forehead fur gave him an irresistibly adorable appearance that challenged the stereotype of a male lion. Over the years, his ever-changing hairstyles—from a middle part to a casual side part—have consistently gone viral on social media. As a result, he became the zoo's iconic ambassador, inspiring countless young people to take an interest in wildlife conservation.
In his golden years, Ah Hang began experiencing age-related physical decline. The zoo implemented a tailored senior care program, customizing his diet and environment to ensure maximum comfort. In December 2025, the senior lion officially retired to a peaceful indoor sanctuary. There, dedicated keepers and veterinarians provided round-the-clock companionship and specialized care until the end.
Although Guangzhou's beloved "hairstyle lion" is gone, his snow-white coat, playful expressions, and calming presence have left behind a legacy of warmth and environmental goodwill that the city will long cherish.
