Guangzhou turns China Tourism Day into citywide celebration of culture, technology, and travel

Guangzhou's skyline came alive on the night of May 19 as the city hosted the national main venue activities for 2026 China Tourism Day, turning the banks of the Pearl River into a dazzling showcase of culture, technology, and travel.

With beams of light sweeping across the skyline, thousands of drones illuminating the night sky, and performances blending Lingnan tradition with modern creativity, the event presented Guangzhou as a city where heritage and innovation meet.

A high-tech spectacle on the Pearl River

Set against the dramatic backdrop of the Pearl River skyline, the opening gala combined grand visual spectacles with distinctive southern Chinese cultural elements.

Traditional performances, including Yingge dance, shared the stage with Cantonese opera-inspired fashion shows. One of the night's biggest highlights was a massive synchronized light and drone show. More than 5,000 drones rose above the river, forming animated images and patterns, while laser beams connected skyscrapers across the city.

The celebration extended beyond Guangzhou itself. Landmark towers in cities including Shanghai and Shenzhen joined the nationwide light-up campaign, extending the event's message of "quality tourism" across the country.

Organizers said the show was designed not only as entertainment but also as a demonstration of China's growing capabilities in lighting technology, drone performance systems, and creative cultural production.

Guangzhou bets big on cruise tourism

The event also served as a platform for unveiling new tourism projects and consumer initiatives. Among the biggest announcements was the launch of ticket sales for the Adora Flora City cruise ship, which will begin sailing from Guangzhou later this year.

The cruise season will feature international routes departing from the city, including trips to Hong Kong (China) and Vietnam, as well as longer Southeast Asia itineraries for travelers seeking regional cruise experiences.

Tourism officials see the new cruise program as part of Guangzhou's broader push to strengthen its role as an international travel hub in South China.

A citywide tourism festival

Unlike a one-day celebration, this year's China Tourism Day activities in Guangzhou will continue throughout the month, with festivals, exhibitions, and cultural events taking place across the city.

At the same time, museums, art venues, and cultural spaces throughout Guangzhou are launching special programs tied to the celebrations. Nearly 80 museums across the city will host exhibitions and interactive events, while the 2026 Guangzhou Art Season will bring together international performances, art shows, and public cultural activities.

A coffee culture festival held near Canton Tower added another contemporary touch to the celebrations, featuring themed installations, pop-up experiences, and creative crossovers combining coffee, tea culture, and designer toys.

For Guangzhou, the event was also an opportunity to present itself to national and international audiences as more than a trade center. By combining heritage, technology, and lifestyle culture, the city is increasingly positioning itself as one of China's leading destinations for urban tourism and cultural experiences.
