"I'm fascinated by China, especially its cuisine and Tai Chi." "Guangdong is not only a culinary capital but also a vital hub for cultural outreach." "I haven't been to Guangdong yet, but I can't wait to go!"
These heartfelt sentiments echoed through the hall on the afternoon of May 26 in Madrid, where the "Guangdong-Spain Story Sharing Event" was held. Hosted by Nanfang Media Group and co-organized by GDToday and Guang Hua Cultures et Media (Spain) S.L., the event brought together diplomats, journalists, academics, and overseas Chinese communities to share stories and promote mutual understanding between China and Spain.

Strengthening media collaboration to tell China's Greater Bay Area story
As 2025 marks the 52nd anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and Spain and the 20th anniversary of the China-Spain Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, the event carried added significance. Zhang Jin, First Secretary and Director of the Consular Section of the Chinese Embassy in Spain, highlighted the success of China's unilateral visa-free policy for Spanish passport holders implemented in December 2023, which allowed 120,000 Spanish nationals to visit China in 2024. He noted Guangdong's vital role as a window into China's reform and opening-up, urging greater media collaboration to portray an authentic and engaging image of both countries.

Liu Qiyu, President of Nanfang Media Group, echoed this sentiment. Reflecting on the long history of China-Spain exchanges, he emphasized how the Belt and Road Initiative has strengthened cooperation between Guangdong and Spain in green energy, port industries, and cultural exchange. He warmly invited Spanish friends to witness the vibrant development of Guangdong and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and to experience firsthand the energy of cities like Guangzhou, the "Millennial Maritime Silk Road Capital."

"Cátedra China" experts appointed as international consultants of GDToday Think Tank
During the sharing session, Liu Qiyu presented international consultant certificates to Marta Montoro and Ramón María Calduch, leaders of the Cátedra China. These appointments signify the beginning of a broader partnership with GDToday Think Tank, founded in December 2024.

Zhao Yang, Editor-in-Chief of GDToday, outlined plans to launch a Spanish-language edition and establish a communication platform for improved understanding between China and Spain. The think tank aims to drive media innovation and assist foreign enterprises in navigating the Chinese market, as well as promote cultural exchange through various activities.

Montoro reaffirmed her foundation's mission to promote Sino-Spanish cooperation and cultural understanding. "China has contributed 5,000 years of civilization, a peaceful philosophy, and its unique socialist path to the world. The world needs to hear China's voice," she said passionately. "Together, we are stronger."

Telling authentic stories of China-Spain connections
The storytelling segment featured heartfelt anecdotes that embodied the theme "When Guangdong Meets Spain."
Wang Weixian, head of Guang Hua Cultures et Media (Spain) S.L., praised the role of overseas Chinese communities in connecting cultures and promoting friendship. Enrique Sancho, Secretary-General of the Spanish Foreign Press Association, recalled his three visits to China and expressed his eagerness to visit Guangdong. He pointed to cultural similarities—such as Spain's love for fitness and China's passion for Tai Chi—as opportunities for mutual learning.

Carmen Chamorro of the Spanish International Press Club stressed the need for factual, balanced reporting. "China is much more complex and welcoming than many in the West assume," she stated, expressing a strong desire to collaborate with GDToday.

José Luis Barceló, President of Financial World, fondly recalled his visits to Guangzhou and Shenzhen, marveling at Guangdong's modernity and economic prowess. "The Greater Bay Area showcases China's unique path to modernization," he said.

Zhang Guohua, President of the Association of Overseas Chinese from Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao in Spain, shared emotional stories of the Chinese immigrants who have established their roots in Spain—bringing their traditions, food, and values with them.
"A familiar accent, a steaming bowl of soup—these things carry deep meaning for us overseas," he said. From Chinese restaurants to community schools, Tai Chi classes, Cantonese opera, and Spring Festival fairs, Zhang described how cultural exchange has become woven into daily life in cities like Madrid and Barcelona.

A bridge of friendship between East and West
The Guangdong-Spain Story Sharing Event stood as a powerful testament to the growing bond between China and Spain. Through shared stories, mutual respect, and active cooperation, both nations are building new bridges of friendship in this era of globalization. As Guangdong continues to step onto the world stage, events like this highlight its unique role in fostering meaningful international ties culturally, economically, and socially.
