On May 9, against the backdrop of the iconic "Kaleidoscope" building, more than 80 women from over a dozen countries gathered at the Shenzhen Women & Children's Building. The event, titled "Gather in Shenzhen: International Women's Exchange," was co-hosted by the Shenzhen Women's Federation and the Foreign Affairs Office to celebrate openness, mutual learning, and the growing role of women in global exchange.
Before the official program, guests took a guided tour of the "Kaleidoscope," experiencing its vibrant colors and thoughtful design for women and children. "I love the atmosphere. Women from different countries coming together shows how inclusive this city is," said Kanwal Shahzina, a Pakistani researcher at Shenzhen Bay Laboratory.
In her opening remarks, Liu Jiachen, chairwoman of the Shenzhen Women's Federation, noted that Shenzhen is actively participating in the APEC "China Year". She described the "Kaleidoscope" as both a child-friendly landmark and an international window where women can share experiences and grow together.
Three women then shared their personal Shenzhen stories. Feng Changhong, a leading designer, recalled arriving in the city 36 years ago with a one-way train ticket. "The spirit of Shenzhen is daring to be first," she said.
Shahzina praised the city's safe and open research environment, adding, "Sometimes I go home late at night, but I never worry. This city is safe enough." Her team's work was recently published in Nature Communications.
Tsinghua scholar Sofia Duly marveled at Shenzhen's transformation from a fishing village into a global tech hub, calling her life here "a truly unique experience."
The event also named four foreign women as "Shenzhen Sister City Ambassadors". A newly formed volunteer storytelling team received its flag, pledging to share Shenzhen's stories worldwide.
Later, a "Shenzhen Sister" performed "Dream It Possible" in English, followed by a cultural showcase featuring traditional Xiangyunsha silk worn by local entrepreneurs and international students. The afternoon closed with a magic show inside the "City of Miracles," blending illusion with warm storytelling.
Organizers said such exchanges will continue to build lasting bonds of friendship and empowerment across borders. "Once you arrive, you are a Shenzhener," a spirit that now reaches far beyond the city.
