On March 13, the inauguration ceremony of the Joseph Lau Medical Building, the new medical complex of the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University (FAH-SYSU), as well as the launch of the Jianhua International Healthcare Center, OBGYN and Pediatrics Center, was held in Guangzhou, Guangdong.

Expansion of high-quality medical resources

The construction of this modern medical complex commenced in 2019. Covering a total construction area of nearly 76,000 square meters, it has been scientifically planned with five core functional areas: Jianhua International Healthcare Center, OBGYN and Pediatrics Center, the Imaging and Radiotherapy Center, the Operating Center, and the Sports Medicine Center. It is equipped with world-class cutting-edge equipment and a helicopter pad for rescue operations.

Xiao Haipeng, president of FAH-SYSU, delivers a speech at the ceremony.

Xiao Haipeng, president of FAH-SYSU, said that this building represents a milestone in the hospital's efforts to build a major platform and strive to become a world-class national medical center. It will further enhance the hospital's capabilities in the diagnosis and treatment of complex and critical diseases and emergency rescue.

The facility will also provide higher-quality medical services for the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) and contribute to the construction of a Healthy China.

The medical complex encompasses the five core functional areas. The Operating Center has 1 class-100 operating room and 9 class-10,000 operating rooms. The Imaging and Radiotherapy Center is outfitted with 5 digital subtraction angiography (DSA) machines, 3 magnetic resonance (MR) machines, 2 positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET-CT) scanners, 2 linear accelerators, and 1 computed tomography (CT) simulation positioning system, among other advanced equipment.

Moreover, the helicopter pad on the roof can accommodate medium-sized helicopters, significantly enhancing the hospital's emergency treatment capabilities.

The rooftop of the building is also equipped with a helicopter pad for rescue operations.

Build a top international medical center based on "DNA Model"

With the commissioning of the new building, medical service supply structures will be further optimized. By leveraging the medical connection mechanism in the GBA, the hospital aims to link up with high-quality international and specialized women and children's medical service systems, thereby improving its ability to contribute to the construction of a modern industrial system in Guangdong Province.

In recent years, the hospital has collaborated with over 40 top international institutions to create a new type of healthcare service network, the "DNA model." This model, which integrates doctors, nurses, and artificial intelligence, provides "zero-distance" high-quality medical services to grassroots areas in China, the GBA, and countries and regions participating in the Belt and Road Initiative through regional medical centers, social health institutions, home health care, and Internet hospitals.

Against this backdrop, with the donation from Mr. Chen Jianhua, chairman of Hengli Group, the Jianhua International Healthcare Center, was built by FAH-SYSU based on the "DNA model".

The center aggregates top-notch resources from 36 of the hospital's national clinical key specialties. Tailoring medical services to patients' needs, it offers innovative healthcare services such as international MDT consultations and remote medical consultations.
