Guangzhou has launched its first direct container shipping route to Chancay Port in Peru, a move set to significantly strengthen trade between China's Greater Bay Area (GBA) and South America. The first ship on the new route, COSCO Shipping's Volga, arrived at Nansha Port on April 29, officially marking the start of the service.

The weekly service includes 11 vessels and connects Nansha with key ports along South America's Pacific coast, including Manzanillo (Mexico), Chancay (Peru), and San Antonio (Chile). The new route is expected to cut shipping times between Nansha and Peru by around 10 days and reduce logistics costs for businesses by up to 20%, according to COSCO Shipping.

The launch is projected to add over 30,000 TEUs in annual international cargo throughput to Nansha Port. In Q1 2025 alone, Nansha handled over 1.83 million TEUs, a year-on-year increase of 38.4%, highlighting the region's growing role in global trade. Guangzhou now operates 150 maritime routes under the Belt and Road Initiative.
