China and Vietnam launch cross-border "smart port" to accelerate trade

A new "smart port" project at the historic China-Vietnam border crossing aims to reduce customs delays and significantly modernize regional trade networks.

The Friendship Pass land port, 176 kilometers from Nanning in China and 170 kilometers from Hanoi in Vietnam, is undergoing a substantial digital transformation. The upgrades are expected to decrease average customs clearance times for trucks from 2-3 hours to just 10 minutes.

The Friendship Pass is a major trade route and a cultural landmark, designated as a top-tier national port and a 4A-level tourist attraction.

Launched in September 2023, the new "smart port" initiative will employ driverless container trucks, automated cranes, and 5G-powered systems to operate around the clock. Satellite navigation and AI-driven inspection tools will streamline cargo checks. China has invested 10.62 billion yuan in its portion of the project, with trial operations anticipated by June 2025.

Recent enhancements at the port include expanded customs facilities, digital platforms for pre-clearance of imports, and dedicated cargo corridors. These improvements are expected to enhance supply chain efficiency between China and ASEAN countries.
