Guangdong battles heat, storms with first typhoon looming

The first typhoon of the year is long overdue. Since 2000, the average formation date for the first typhoon has been March 16.

On June 6, China's Meteorological Center (NMC) medium-term forecast indicated a high probability that this year's first typhoon would form near the Philippines around June 10 and could affect the southeastern coastal areas. Another typhoon might also develop in the Northwest Pacific Ocean.

At 8:00 a.m. on June 7, tropical disturbance 92W was located about 620 kilometers southeast of Manila, Philippines (14°N, 126°E). The maximum wind speed near its center was 8 m/s (force 5), and the minimum central pressure was 1006 hectopascals.

The disturbance is expected to linger over the ocean east of Luzon and gradually intensify. It may develop into a tropical depression within the next 72 hours and could become this year's first typhoon, Wutip, around June 10, potentially reaching typhoon or severe typhoon levels (level 12–14).

However, on the morning of June 8, @Weather China reported new changes in the typhoon forecast. Models have reduced the likelihood of the low-pressure system developing east of the Philippines and are now considering the formation of a low-pressure system in the South China Sea moving northward. Whether it will become a typhoon remains uncertain. Stay tuned for the latest updates.

In recent days, Guangdong has been affected by persistent thunderstorms and high temperatures. As of 3:20 p.m. on June 8, Guangdong has issued 109 yellow alerts for high temperatures.

From June 9 to 10, Guangdong will experience hot weather. Qingyuan, Shaoguan, and cities and counties in western Guangdong will be mostly cloudy with (thunder) showers and locally torrential rain. Other areas will remain cloudy to sunny with scattered (thunder) showers. The highest temperatures will reach 30–33°C in northern Shaoguan and Qingyuan, as well as coastal southern Guangdong, and 34–37°C elsewhere.

On June 11, most parts of Guangdong will continue to experience hot weather, primarily with cloudy skies and scattered (thunder) showers. The highest temperatures will be 30–33°C in coastal areas of southern Guangdong and 34–37°C elsewhere.
