Yangjiang rises as Guangdong's top powerhouse in 14th Five-Year Plan period

Yangjiang, a coastal city in western Guangdong, has emerged as the province's leading city in installed power generation capacity. A ten-million-kilowatt-class offshore wind power base is expected to be operational in 2026.

This was revealed at a press conference held in Guangzhou on January 13, which was part of a series reviewing Guangdong's development during the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-2025).

Yangjiang is renowned as the "Capital of Green Energy," focusing on its booming offshore wind sector. It hosts China's largest and most complete wind power equipment manufacturing cluster, with over 7 million kilowatts of installed offshore wind capacity, ranking among the top nationwide.

The city's innovation is underscored by over ten global pioneering achievements, including the world's first typhoon-resistant floating wind turbine and the first 500 kV three-core submarine cable. Last year, it launched the world's first 2-million-kilowatt flexible direct current (VSC-HVDC) offshore wind project.

Yangjiang is also actively promoting its foreign trade. From 2021 to 2024, Yangjiang's foreign trade and actual utilized foreign capital grew at average annual rates of 7.4% and 28.4%, respectively. The city has expanded its global links by signing letters of intent for friendly exchanges and cooperation with cities across Europe, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia.

To boost investment, Yangjiang has organized specialized teams for investment promotion, project establishment, and enterprise services. It has set up 17 new liaison offices worldwide, partnered with four global investment promotion agencies, and secured 41 major projects valued at over 1 billion yuan each.

The approval of the China (Yangjiang) Cross-Border E-Commerce Comprehensive Pilot Zone has fueled digital trade, with its platform transaction volume surpassing 4 billion yuan in 2025.

In hardware and knives, Yangjiang maintains a dominant global position, boasting the world's most complete industrial chain. It supplies about 75% of China's total output and 85% of its exports in this sector.

Connectivity with the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) has also significantly improved. Travel time from Yangjiang to core GBA cities like Guangzhou and Shenzhen is now under one hour.

By integrating into the GBA's logistics network, Yangjiang has launched a sea-rail intermodal service between Yangjiang and Shenzhen's Yantian Port and promotes a "combined port" model with key GBA hubs. These efforts helped Yangjiang Port achieve a throughput of over 40 million tons.
