Rare blue moon to grace Guangzhou's night sky on May 31

Get ready to look up! On May 31, skywatchers will be treated to a rare cosmic event, and Guangzhou residents and skywatchers around the world will have a chance to observe a "blue moon," which is also expected to be the smallest full moon in 2026.

Despite its name, the moon will not actually appear blue. A calendar "blue moon" refers to the second full moon in a single calendar month. Since the lunar cycle is 29.5 days, this event only happens every two to three years. Astronomers estimate that the next calendar blue moon will come in 2029.

What makes this full moon even more special? On June 1, the moon will reach its apogee (the farthest point from Earth). Coincidentally, the full moon on May 31 falls near apogee, appearing roughly 5.5% smaller and 10.5% dimmer than an average full moon. It's a genuine mini-moon!

Tips for Viewing in Guangzhou:

The moon will rise at 19:17 on May 31. For the best viewing experience, observe it 30 to 60 minutes after moonrise. It will appear low above the horizon, glowing with a warm orange-yellow hue.

While we often look forward to supermoons, this time skywatchers can appreciate a more delicate lunar sight.
