Passenger traffic between the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin and Macao is set to rise sharply during the upcoming May Day holiday, with border authorities forecasting another peak period at Hengqin Port.

According to officials, average daily crossings could reach around 116,000 trips between May 1 and 5. The busiest days are expected to be May 2 and 3, when holiday periods in the Chinese mainland and Macao overlap, alongside increased tourism, commuting, and large-scale events.

A significant spike is anticipated on the evening of May 2, when multiple concerts in Macao, held near Hengqin Port, are due to end. Authorities warn that inbound queues could build up starting from around 22:00, with total crossings that day potentially hitting 130,000.

Travelers are advised to plan ahead and avoid peak periods where possible. During busy times, passengers are encouraged to use the 24-hour Qingmao Port.

Dedicated lanes will be available for priority groups, including the elderly, young children, pregnant passengers, and frequent cross-border commuters. Facial recognition systems have also been expanded across self-service checkpoints to expedite the clearance process. However, authorities stress that valid travel documents must be carried at all times.

Visitors to Macao are reminded to retain their authorization-to-stay slips and to check the permitted length of stay to avoid overstaying.
