Mexican artist Frida Kahlo's original works to debut in Shenzhen next month

The original works by Frida Kahlo, Mexico's legendary artist, will be exhibited in China for the first time at the Sea World Culture and Arts Center in Shenzhen from July 12 to September 15.

Known for her vibrant colors, fragmented body imagery, and soul-piercing gaze, Frida has left an indelible mark on 20th-century art and remains an enduring cultural icon.

Titled "Frida's Paradox," this exhibition features over 250 valuable pieces, including original oil paintings, watercolors, handwritten letters, and personal items. Rather than focusing solely on her famous early self-portraits, it invites visitors to explore the deeper, less visible layers of Frida’s life and art, highlighting the contradictions and complexities behind her public image.

Co-curated by Frida's great-niece Cristina Kahlo and Juan Rafael Coronel Rivera, grandson of Frida's husband Diego Rivera, the exhibition offers fresh insights into Frida's childhood, her inspiration drawn from pre-Columbian art, Mexican folk traditions, and the indigenous clothing and jewelry she wore. It also highlights her late-period still lifes and manuscripts, many of which are exhibited in China for the first time.

Visitors will learn how Frida transformed her physical suffering, intense emotion, and cultural identity into timeless masterpieces.
