Rain weakens and temperatures rise across Guangdong starting June 18

Guangdong Province is set to experience a significant weather shift as persistent rainfall weakens and temperatures begin to rise across the region. After days of heavy downpours, meteorological authorities confirm that precipitation will noticeably diminish starting June 18, with gradual warming trends expected in the coming days.

The recent weather pattern reached its peak on June 17, when atmospheric conditions combined with southwest monsoon influences to produce severe storms. Northern Shaoguan, Qingyuan, Zhaoqing, Maoming, and Yangjiang faced torrential to extremely heavy rainfall, with isolated areas recording over 250 millimeters of precipitation.

Notably, Xiaosanjiang Town in Lianshan Zhuang and Yao Autonomous County, Luokeng Town in Dianbai District, and Xinxu Town in Yangxi County emerged as the hardest-hit areas. While these regions battled extreme conditions, other parts of Guangdong experienced moderate to heavy rainfall.

This prolonged wet spell delivered measurable cooling effects. On June 17, maximum temperatures in eastern and central Guangdong dropped by 2-6°C compared to the previous day, with slight variations recorded across other regions. The western areas of the Pearl River Delta maintained stable temperatures or saw marginal 1°C increases, while most other locations registered 1-2°C decreases.

The Guangdong Meteorological Observatory forecasts a progressive reduction in rainfall activity from June 18 onward, accompanied by rising temperatures. On June 18, western Guangdong and areas near the Guangdong-Guangxi border should anticipate moderate rain with localized heavy bursts. By June 19, scattered thunderstorms and isolated heavy showers will affect most regions, transitioning to partial cloud cover with residual showers by June 20, particularly in southern areas.

In Guangzhou, the provincial capital, weather conditions will follow a similar trajectory. June 18 will see partly cloudy skies with thunderstorms and localized heavy downpours, accompanied by temperatures between 25-31°C. Thermometers are expected to climb to 33°C on June 19 under partly sunny conditions with continued thunderstorm activity, reaching 34°C by June 20 amidst partly cloudy skies.

Meteorological experts issue critical warnings about ongoing hazards, particularly in areas overlapping with previous Typhoon Butterfly impact zones. Northern Guangdong, the northern Pearl River Delta regions, and western coastal areas face elevated risks of flash floods, landslides, mudslides, and urban flooding.

Authorities stress continued vigilance as saturated soils from prior rain events maintain heightened geological instability, with delayed-onset landslides and slope failures remaining possible threats. Residents are advised to monitor weather updates and exercise caution near mountainous terrain and watercourses.
