A Chinese water dragon, a wild animal under national second-class protection in China, was recently spotted at Dayan Mountain Scenic Spot in Heshan, a county-level city in Jiangmen, Guangdong. This discovery highlights the area's improved environment.
The reptile, measuring about 30 centimeters with a bright green body and distinctive spines along its back, was sighted by a staff member during a routine patrol near a mountain stream. After reviewing photographs and consulting local forestry authorities, the scenic spot confirmed that the animal is a Chinese water dragon.
The Chinese water dragon prefers humid and forested habitats with abundant vegetation and clean water. It is considered an important indicator of ecosystem health due to its sensitivity to habitat conditions and human disturbance.
Dayan Mountain's well-preserved forests and plentiful water provide a suitable habitat for a variety of wildlife, the scenic spot said. Protected species such as Chinese hwamei and owls have been recorded there, and the latest sighting further reflects the area's rich biodiversity and continued ecological improvement.
