Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST) is taking steps to extend its presence in Hengqin, aiming to foster innovation and strengthen ties with businesses across the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA). During an open house event in Macao on February 23, President Joseph Lee Hun-wei announced that the university has officially submitted a proposal to the government to expand its operations into Hengqin.
Lee explained that due to space limitations on the main campus in Macao, the university plans to launch programs in fields such as Traditional Chinese Medicine, Materials Science and Engineering, Environmental Science and Engineering, and Humanities at the Hengqin site. This expansion is part of a broader strategy to enhance research and development collaborations with local enterprises, promoting a closer integration of academia and industry.
MUST has already established a presence in Hengqin with the setup of key national research laboratories, including the State Key Laboratory of Quality Research in Chinese Medicine (MUST) and the Lunar and Planetary Science Laboratory (MUST), which is located at the Zhuhai MUST Science and Technology Research Institute.
Founded in 2000, MUST is now the largest comprehensive university in Macao, with more than 23,000 students enrolled. The university offers a wide range of degree programs across nine academic faculties, alongside four national-level research platforms.
