Recently, the Ceremony of the 2nd Guangdong Friendship Award was held in Guangzhou. Professor Duan Jinqiao, Chair Professor and Executive Dean of the School of Sciences at Great Bay University (GBU), based in Dongguan's Songshan Lake, was among the honorees.

The Guangdong Friendship Award is an honorary award to recognize foreign nationals who have made outstanding contributions to Guangdong's economic and social development and its exchanges with the rest of the world. This year, 47 foreign experts and international friends from 21 countries received the award.
Professor Duan Jinqiao is an internationally renowned applied mathematician and a national high-level talent. He received his Ph.D. from Cornell University in the United States and has long been dedicated to research in applied mathematics and interdisciplinary fields, as well as cross-disciplinary studies that integrate data science with biology, neuroscience and Earth's dynamical systems.
Since returning to China, he has been actively engaged in scientific research and talent cultivation in Guangdong.
In research platform development, he led Great Bay University in obtaining approval for its first Guangdong provincial key laboratory—the Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Mathematical and Neural Dynamical Systems. In talent recruitment, he brought three distinguished visiting professors to the School of Sciences and the provincial key laboratory, including Henri Orland, a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
In international exchanges and cooperation, he facilitated a framework cooperation agreement between the university and the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), promoted the signing of a joint postdoctoral training agreement with the Steklov Mathematical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), and reached an agreement on a joint mathematics education program with the Institute of Mathematics, Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology.
In applying for major projects, he led Great Bay University in securing, for the first time, a major-category "Cooperative Innovative Research Team" project under the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC).
