Residents in Huacheng Subdistrict, Guangzhou, receive multilingual volunteer team

On November 2, Huacheng Subdistrict in Guangzhou's Huadu District came alive with music, performances, and cultural exchange as the newly branded Huacheng Street Foreign Language Volunteer Service Team officially launched at Sunac Mall. More than 300 local and international residents attended to witness the debut.

The 109 member-strong team now includes lawyers, foreign teachers, students, and civil servants. Since its formation, it has helped nearly 3,000 people settle into life in Huacheng.

"With their dedication, professionalism, and efficiency, the volunteers have played a key role in supporting international services and fostering connections between local and foreign residents," said Deng Changxiong, Deputy Director-General of the Foreign Affairs Office of the People's Government of Guangzhou Municipality.

Several international residents shared their experiences. Billy, a British content creator who has lived in Huadu for four years, recalled the challenges he faced with banking when he first arrived. "I think the volunteer service shows a really friendly spirit," he said.

Marcie Rivera, a U.S. resident who has lived in Huadu for ten years, noted the area's growth from a single café to many, and was especially impressed by the increasing number of English speakers. "The volunteer team is very helpful. As an expat, you're very far away from home. It feels like here, you're never lonely as somebody can help you," she said.

South African resident Ashvir Goodoon shared a similar experience. "There's usually someone who speaks English who would help you, or if you can speak Chinese, they are also always willing to help you and try to accommodate your Chinese, even if it's not that good."

At present, Huacheng Subdistrict hosts over 500 foreign residents, attracts more than 22,000 international visitors annually, and is home to 40 foreign-related businesses. During the event, INFO Guangdong, the province's information service platform, showcased its Guangdong Facts brochure to offer international residents practical guidance for living in Guangdong.

The launch also featured lively performances, including pop songs, rope-skipping, African drumming, and dance. Watching the energetic rope-skipping, Billy noted the excitement building for the 15th National Games: "Even the performances here are showcasing athleticism; you see people encouraging more time for exercise, and I think for children as well as adults, it has such a great effect."

Interactive zones allowed visitors to explore Huacheng's culture and services, take National Games quizzes, receive legal guidance on visas and labor law, and discover local products alongside international business highlights. Later, the event concluded with a walk through Intercity Park, where volunteers and expat guests enjoyed the greenery and reflected on Huadu's urban improvements.

The event was organized by South and the Huacheng Subdistrict Office of Huadu District.
