Don't touch! These snails may spread brain parasites

As persistent rainfall continues across Guangdong, large snails have been spotted crawling across sidewalks and greenbelts after downpours. Property management in several residential communities has also begun to intensify cleanup efforts regarding these "uninvited guests".

These snails are Achatina fulica, commonly known as African giant snails. Since they can't survive in water, once it rains heavily, they crawl out from their hiding places. Listed among China's first batch of 16 invasive alien species, African giant snails are intermediate hosts for numerous parasites and pathogens that can infect both humans and animals.

Most notably, they can carry Angiostrongylus cantonensis (rat lungworm), a parasite that can invade the human brain and central nervous system. In severe cases, infection can lead to eosinophilic meningitis, resulting in prolonged fever, headaches, and even life-threatening complications. These parasites can be found not only in the snail's body and excreta, but also in the mucus trails left behind as they crawl, contaminating anything they touch, including fruits, vegetables, towels, and toilet seats. Experts urge the public not to touch or consume these snails under any circumstances.

Prevention tips:

1. After touching snails or suspicious items, disinfect with 75% alcohol and wash with soap for at least 20 seconds.

2. Rinse vegetables under running water for 30 seconds, then soak them in a vegetable disinfectant for 10 minutes. Pay special attention to the undersides of leafy greens.

3. Spread coffee grounds or lime powder (natural snail repellents) in areas where snails are frequently seen. Clean drains and remove fallen leaves weekly.
