On June 1, Wupei Village in Renshan Town, Huidong County, Huizhou City, held its annual dragon boat race on a canal winding between lush green rice fields.

The dragon boat race takes place in Wupei Village.
At 3 p.m., people gathered at the field embankments, waiting for the race to begin. As the drumbeat started, paddlers tensed in position. With a coordinated plunge, their paddles hit the water, sending ripples across the surface. All the participants were locals from Wupei Village. "Winning isn't what matters," said Ms. Liu, a resident. "It's about everyone having fun together."

Dragon boat racing is a time-honored tradition during the Dragon Boat Festival in many coastal towns in Huizhou. Every year, about a month before the festival, teams begin their training. On the first training day, villagers bind lemongrass, pomelo leaves, or Chinese lettuce to the front of the boat, a gesture symbolizing hopes for peace.
