On September 23, Guangdong's main provincial celebration of the ninth Chinese Farmers' Harvest Festival was held in Zhanjiang, a coastal city in western Guangdong.
Launched in 2018, the festival aims to celebrate harvests, showcase achievements in agricultural and rural development, promote local agricultural products and boost rural consumption and advance rural revitalization.
At the event, two themed markets opened simultaneously, with one showcasing Zhanjiang's local harvest specialties and the other featuring tropical agricultural products. Together, they featured 40 booths showcasing local specialties from across Guangdong and tropical agricultural products from across China. Tasting and business-matching areas and a science popularization zone were also set up.
Display stands featured specialty fruits and vegetables from various cities. As a major marine city, Zhanjiang showcased popular fresh products from its marine ranches such as golden pompano, miiuy croaker and greater amberjack, while a variety of dried products—including dried red fish, dried seahorse, fish maw, dried scallops and dried shrimp—were sun-dried on site.
Cutting-edge marine equipment, including underwater robots, surface operation drones and aquaculture robots, was also showcased.
Zhanjiang is a major agricultural city in Guangdong. It has about 119,187 hectares of fruit-growing area and produces 3.601 million tonnes of fruit, ranking second in Guangdong.
It is also the birthplace of sea rice. The city has built more than 333 hectares of saline-alkali-tolerant rice demonstration bases and promoted the planting of more than 6,667 hectares of such rice. More than 120 farming households have participated in specialized cultivation, helping increase farmers' incomes by more than 100 million yuan.
Zhanjiang's marine fishery output has ranked first in Guangdong for more than 30 consecutive years, with premium seafood species such as golden pompano and oysters. The city has 40 marine ranch and related projects in reserve, with a total investment of 18.12 billion yuan.
