Guangdong launches world's 1st peritoneal dialysis large model

Recently, the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University (FAH-SYSU) and Digital Health China Technologies Co., Ltd. jointly released the world's first big model and AI assistant for peritoneal dialysis (PD).

The PD large model is based on the DHC+DeepSeek dual-engine architecture, combined with multimodal fusion technology, enabling precise understanding and processing of complex information. The AI assistant can provide 24/7 online professional knowledge consultation services for doctors, nurses, and patients.

Currently, the beta version of the model has been launched, and it is expected to be officially released within this year.

Professor Chen Wei, Director of the Internal Medicine Department and Nephrology Department of FAH-SYSU, explained that the relatively small number of PD patients is attributed to various factors, including uneven medical resources, inadequate patient awareness, and challenges in complication management. High-quality PD centers have high requirements for both the technical level of medical institutions and the self-management level of patients.

Currently, the PD management team in FAH-SYSU includes four professional senior experts and 16 nurses, providing comprehensive teaching and training, outpatient follow-up, and 24/7 emergency guidance and assistance to around 1,000 PD patients, answering various questions they may encounter during home PD.

"We trained the large model with a carefully selected and rich knowledge base, so its answers are very professional and reliable, rarely experiencing 'AI hallucinations'," said Associate Professor Ye Hongjian from the Nephrology Department of FAH-SYSU.

Ye added that the references and materials for this model do not originate from the internet but are instead an integration of professional knowledge and real-life case studies, encompassing guidelines, consensus, textbooks, research publications, and more.

To make the assistant more adept at capturing the intent of the asker, FAH-SYSU has also integrated over 300 frequently asked questions by patients for training purposes. Through continuous correction and optimization, the model is able to provide more professional and accurate answers.

Another powerful function of this PD large model and AI assistant, which is gradually being developed into software, is that it can be deployed on the hospital's local computers and integrated with the information system to generate intelligent outputs such as risk stratification, risk factor identification, and diagnostic and treatment decision recommendations for individual patients with a single click, providing professional assistance to doctors and nurses.

The Nephrology Department of FAH-SYSU is one of the founding units of nephrology in China. Since 1963, it has been the first to carry out PD for renal failure in China, laying a solid foundation for the discipline in the field of PD.
