This autumn, a greenhouse in Gumian Village, Pingtai Town, Yunan County, Yunfu City (云浮市郁南县平台镇古勉村), is yielding a bumper crop of Xizhoumi 25 Hami melons. Sweet, crisp and juicy, these locally grown melons are the county's first successful trial crop of the fruit, adding a new variety to its specialty farming.

Inside the greenhouse, lush green vines fill the space, and evenly shaped melons with clearly netted rinds hang among the leaves. Farmers are busy picking, sorting and loading the fruit onto trucks.

The greenhouse operator said growing under cover helps control pests and diseases and makes standardized management easier, so the melons are uniform in shape and ripen at the same time. Most of the current crop goes to markets in the Pearl River Delta.

The farm also plans to offer fruit picking to draw nearby residents and tourists, combining specialty farming with rural tourism.
