Guangdong issues first red flood warning this year as typhoon disrupts rail services

Upstream inflows have continued to push up the water level of the Xijiang River. As of 8 a.m. on July 7, the water level at Fengkai Jiangkou Hydrological Station on the Xijiang River, located in Jiangkou Town, Fengkai County, Zhaoqing, Guangdong Province, had reached 17.24 meters. The warning level is 17.80 meters.

Based on the current rainfall and hydrological conditions, the station's water level is expected to reach the warning level around noon on July 7. It is projected to rise to about 22.0 meters by the morning of July 8, exceeding the levee crest elevation of the old urban area in Jiangkou Subdistrict, Fengkai County. The water level is expected to continue rising thereafter.

Given the current situation, the Guangdong Hydrological Bureau upgraded its flood warning for the Fengkai section of the Xijiang River to red at 8 a.m. on July 7. The bureau is closely monitoring rainfall and water conditions, strengthening hydrological monitoring and forecast consultations, and issuing rolling forecasts, warnings, and risk advisories to help protect lives and property.

Hydrological experts have warned that, with the water level still rising,  residents in low-lying riverside areas should be evacuated and property moved to safety. Any activities unrelated to flood control should be suspended in the affected river sections. Special attention should be paid to the Panlong River in Fengkai County, which is vulnerable to backwater effects from Xijiang River floods, and the public should closely follow the latest hydrological warnings.

Parts of Guangxi and Hunan have seen torrential to extreme rainfall in recent days due to Typhoon Maysak and the monsoon.

To ensure passenger safety, China Railway Guangzhou Group has adjusted train operations in response to the typhoon. Some services on the Shanghai-Kunming, Beijing-Guangzhou, and Guangzhou-Maoming railways will be suspended from July 6 to 7. Additionally, some services on the Hengyang-Liuzhou railway will be suspended from July 6 to 8. Passengers can check for affected services on the 12306 app.

Weather conditions may also cause delays on some services. Railway authorities will continue to adjust operations as conditions evolve. Passengers are advised to check the 12306 app and station announcements for the latest service updates before traveling.
