Huizhou in southeast Guangdong province maintained excellent ambient air quality throughout the year of 2024 and achieved 100% compliance in drinking water source quality, according to a press conference on June 6 held by the Huizhou Municipal Bureau of Ecology and Environment.
Huizhou's ambient air quality remained excellent in 2024. Annual average concentrations of all six monitored pollutants met standards: sulfur dioxide (SO₂), nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), carbon monoxide (CO), and inhalable particulate matter (PM₁₀) reached National Class I standards, while fine particulate matter (PM₂.₅) and ozone (O₃) met National Class II standards. The comprehensive air quality index stood at 2.48, with an Air Quality Index (AQI) compliance rate of 95.9%.
In terms of water environment quality, all 19 state and provincial assessment sections for surface water in Huizhou achieved 100% compliance with water quality standards. Six rivers—the Dongjiang Mainstream (Huizhou section), Xizhi River, Zengjiang Mainstream (Huizhou section), Sha River, Gongzhuang River, and Jilong River—were rated as having excellent water quality. Fifteen major lakes and reservoirs maintained a 100% rate of excellent/good water quality. Among 16 offshore monitoring points, 99.7% of the area achieved an annual average water quality rating of "Excellent" (Class I or II).
Additionally, Huizhou's Ecological Quality Index (EQI) for 2024 was 72, classifying its ecology as Class I. This indicates high natural ecosystem coverage, rich biodiversity, an intact ecological structure, and well-functioning ecosystems.
