As China marked the 16th annual China Tourism Day on May 19, Guangzhou welcomed a special tour group from Malaysia, underscoring the growing cultural and tourism ties between Guangdong and Southeast Asia.

The group is the first tour group from Malaysia under the Program of Mutual Visits of 1,000 Tourists to Both China and Malaysia Respectively in 2026. Organized by GZL International Travel Service, the trip is seen as a sign that tourism cooperation between Guangdong and Malaysia is quickly turning into real market momentum.

The visitors have begun a six-day, five-night journey across the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, traveling through Guangzhou, Foshan, Qingyuan, and Zhongshan. Their itinerary includes popular attractions such as the Gulong Gorge Glass Grand Canyon, the Museum of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, and Yongqing Fang.

The tour also places strong emphasis on Lingnan culture and Cantonese cuisine. Visitors will sample local specialties including Qingyuan chicken, Shunde-style fish banquets, and lychee wood-roasted goose. A night cruise along the Pearl River will offer them a glimpse of Guangzhou's vibrant skyline and nightlife.

Many members of the group are ethnic Chinese from Malaysia and speak Cantonese, giving them a natural cultural connection with Guangdong. For some, the must-visit landmark is Canton Tower, affectionately known locally as "Xiaomanyao", or "Slim Waist". Others said a trip to Guangzhou would not be complete without shopping for local products to take home, while many were eager to explore Guangdong's celebrated food scene, saying there was simply "too much good food to try".
