Guangdong Intercity Railway Operation Co., Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of Guangzhou Metro Group, won a 10-year infrastructure maintenance contract worth more than 900 million yuan for Malaysia's East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) on July 30, marking the company's first overseas contract for a major intercity railway maintenance project.
Guangzhou Metro established its first overseas subsidiary in Kuala Lumpur the same day to support the project.
The ECRL is a key project under the Belt and Road Initiative and the largest railway infrastructure project in Malaysia's history. Stretching about 665 kilometers, it will connect the west and east coasts of Peninsular Malaysia, linking major cities and ports.
Main construction is due for completion in August 2026, followed by system testing and trial operations. Commercial services are due to start in stages from January 2027.
Under the contract, Guangdong Intercity will maintain the railway's infrastructure and equipment and provide technical support for operations and staff training.
The project marks another step in Guangzhou Metro's overseas expansion following its rail transit projects in Pakistan and Colombia. The company's operations and projects extend across Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Africa and the Americas.
