BBC's nature documentary "Wild Guangdong" premieres worldwide on December 7

The 4K ultra-high-definition nature documentary "Wild Guangdong" will premiere globally on December 7 on BBC Earth Asia. In China, the three-episode series will air on CCTV-9 and Guangdong TV from December 8–10 at 21:00, and will subsequently stream on major online video platforms such as Youku, iQIYI, Tencent Video, and Bilibili.

Spanning three 50-minute episodes, "Wild Guangdong" showcases the biodiversity of the province's mountains, oceans, and cities, presenting a vivid, multidimensional portrait of Guangdong's landscapes to audiences worldwide.

Co-produced over three years by Guangdong Radio and Television Station (GRT) and BBC Studios, the documentary marks the first deep collaboration between BBC Studios and a provincial-level media organization in China.

Robi Stanton, Managing Director for Media and Streaming, Asia Pacific at BBC Studios, said, "'Wild Guangdong' highlights the province's unique geography, climate, and terrain. It will air on BBC Earth Asia and regional streaming platforms from December 7, reaching more than 20 million households across Southeast Asia and South Korea, as well as China's Hong Kong and Taiwan. We believe international audiences will be eager to discover the natural wonders of Guangdong through this new documentary."

Shan Yonghui, Chief Producer of "Wild Guangdong" and Deputy Director of GRT, noted, "Through our collaboration with the BBC, we aim to reveal a Guangdong that viewers have never seen. This project represents not just a blend of technologies, but a resonance of ecological vision and cinematic storytelling—we want to tell a life story rooted in Lingnan yet meaningful to the world."

Despite being situated within the global arid belt along the Tropic of Cancer, Guangdong's microclimates and complex landforms nurture more than 1,000 animal species and over 6,000 plant species, forming an interconnected ecosystem of mountains, rivers, cities, and seas. "Wild Guangdong" explores not only ancient forests and deep-sea realms but also the rhythm of life on the urban edge—from migratory birds soaring over Guangzhou to fiddler crabs in mangroves and rare orchids at the South China National Botanical Garden.

Structured like a "pearl chain," the series links together compelling stories across Guangdong's diverse environments. Filming took place year-round across the Nanling primeval forests, South China Sea coral reefs, coastal mangroves, and urban green spaces, capturing rare moments such as black kites over Danxia landscapes, Chinese white dolphins riding the waves, synchronized coral spawning, and the discovery of a new gecko species.
