Seven years of Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge: 93 mln travelers highlight growing GBA connectivity

The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (HZMB) has facilitated over 93.34 million passenger trips and 19.42 million vehicle passages through its Zhuhai port as of October 22, 2025, seven years after its opening.

Since its opening on October 23, 2018, the 55-kilometer HZMB, the world's longest sea-crossing bridge-tunnel system, has significantly shortened travel time between Hong Kong, Zhuhai, and Macao from three hours to about 45 minutes. It has enhanced connectivity in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA).

In 2019, border inspection data recorded 12.88 million travelers and 860,000 vehicles. By 2024, these figures had risen to 27 million travelers and 5.55 million vehicles.

From January to October 2025, over 25.1 million travelers and 5.46 million vehicles were recorded, representing increases of 17% and 25% year-on-year. Annual traffic is expected to exceed 30 million travelers and 6 million vehicles by the end of the year.

This year, the number of Mainland travelers using the bridge exceeded 10.15 million, including over 4.6 million visitors with Hong Kong-Macao travel endorsements, both record highs. Foreign travelers totaled 421,000, up 26.7% year-on-year.

With new sea crossings such as the ShenZhong Link and Huangmaohai Passage opening, along with the implementation of the "Macao Vehicles Northbound" and "Hong Kong Vehicles Northbound" policies, traffic has surged. In 2023, the Zhuhai Port handled about 9,000 vehicles daily; by 2025, this number had doubled to over 18,000, reaching 20,000 on weekends and holidays.

In 2019, about 4.5 million Hong Kong and Macao residents crossed via the bridge; in 2025, that number has already surpassed 14.36 million.
