Unit 2 of the Taipingling Nuclear Power Project in Guangdong was connected to the grid for commercial operation on August 3, completing Phase I of the project.
Developed by China General Nuclear Power Group (CGN), Taipingling is the first domestically developed third-generation nuclear power project in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area to use Hualong One technology.

The project sits in Huidong County, Huizhou City, and is planned to house six Hualong One units, to be built in three phases. Phase I, comprising Units 1 and 2, received state approval on April 8, 2019, and Unit 1 entered commercial operation in April this year.
With Unit 2 now meeting the conditions for commercial operation, Phase I has been fully completed, said Zhang Guoqiang, chairman of CGN Huizhou Nuclear Power Co., Ltd.
Together, the two units are expected to generate more than 18 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity a year, based on the average annual utilization hours of domestic nuclear power in 2025. That is enough to meet the residential and industrial electricity needs of nearly 2 million people for one year, and equivalent to cutting carbon dioxide emissions by about 16.63 million tons annually.
Work is continuing on the remaining phases. Construction of Units 3 and 4, which make up Phase II, is well under way.
Phase III, also comprising two units, has recently secured approval from the State Council and will adopt Hualong One 2.0 technology.
