12-year-old boy discovers dinosaur egg fossil in Heyuan, Guangdong

Chen Zixi, a 12-year-old boy from Shuangxia Village in Heyuan, Guangdong, discovered a dinosaur egg fossil near his home.

Chen brought the fossil to the Heyuan Dinosaur Museum on October 3. He said he found it under a tree near a flower bed. The roughly spherical fossil was about 14 centimeters in diameter and remained well preserved.

Based on Chen's information, researchers visited the site and found another dinosaur egg fossil under a nearby tree. It had been placed in the flower bed as a decoration by local residents. Both fossils were later taken to the museum for preservation. Researchers plan to confirm where the fossils were originally unearthed and conduct further studies.

The discovery echoed an event 30 years ago. On March 6, 1996, several children in the same village discovered Heyuan's first known dinosaur egg nest, marking the beginning of the city's efforts to protect and study its dinosaur fossil resources.

Known as the "Hometown of Dinosaurs in China," Heyuan has more than 20,000 dinosaur egg fossils in its museum collection. In 2004, the Heyuan Dinosaur Museum was awarded a Guinness World Record for its collection of 10,008 dinosaur egg fossils.
