Ethiopian wins Guangzhou Marathon 2024, breaking event record

The Guangzhou Marathon 2024 kicked off with a gunshot at the Guangzhou Tianhe Sports Center at 7:30 am on December 8, 2024.

26,000 runners competed in the 42.195-kilometer marathon. The 42.195-kilometer course connects iconic landmarks and cultural sites, weaving through historic arcade streets and a bustling modern CBD.

Gebise Lelisa Debele of Ethiopia won the event in 2:06:28, setting a new record for the Guangzhou Marathon and achieving his personal best. Chen Tianyu from Yunnan province won the sixth place in the event, thereby claiming the men's national championship.

Before this race, the all-time record for the Guangzhou Marathon was 2 hours, 8 minutes, and 4 seconds, which was set by Gebretsadik Abraha Adihana, an Ethiopian runner, in 2019.
