McDonald's China opens first ocean-themed restaurant in Qianhai

McDonald's China opened its first ocean-themed restaurant, the Wanghai Road outlet in Qianhai's sea world, on October 27 in partnership with the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), bringing sustainable fishing from the supply chain to consumers.

Marine motifs and eco-friendly circular design run throughout the outlet, from its facade and glass curtain wall to a surfboard-shaped canopy. A second-floor LED screen shows underwater footage, while table stickers explain the habits of Alaska pollock, MSC certification and marine conservation.

An industry source close to the MSC said sustainable fishing practices had largely stayed upstream, and few consumers knew about them. The restaurant brings these practices into everyday dining and is expected to help the public understand them better.

On opening day, ocean-themed paintings by children, entries in a contest held with the children's publication Mangrove, went on display on the second floor. The restaurant will host marine science exhibitions and classes.

Qianhai, a core area in Shenzhen's drive to become a global ocean city, is expanding its blue economy. Analysts said the partnership offers a replicable model for promoting sustainability to consumers.
