What consumers want from a drink is changing. Taste still matters, but ingredients, nutritional value and added benefits are increasingly shaping purchase decisions.
Recent research points to growing interest in drinks that offer more than refreshment. A May 2026 study by Ipsos found that 41% of Americans are looking for more foods and beverages that support hydration, while 36% are seeking products that help improve energy levels.
Ingredient transparency is also becoming increasingly important. According to ADM's 2025 Global Consumer Trends Report, 70% of consumers worldwide say they at least sometimes look for products made with ingredients they recognize. The report also points to growing interest in natural ingredients and functional products.

The trend is also being reflected in China's beverage market, where brands are expanding beyond traditional categories and exploring products with more specific functions.
One example is plant-based beverage brand WALOVI, which unveiled two new drinks in Guangzhou on August 10. LEGEND-KING is a natural electrolyte drink positioned for energy and hydration, while LEMULI is a berry-based juice designed with children's nutritional needs in mind.

Alongside the new products, WALOVI also unveiled redesigned packaging for its classic range. Inspired by traditional Chinese architecture and bamboo, the new design blends traditional Chinese elements with a contemporary look.

For Chinese brands such as WALOVI, the trend is creating new opportunities both at home and overseas.
