Nestled in the terraced hills of Guangdong's Lianshan Zhuang and Yao Autonomous County in Qingyuan, farmers are busy harvesting this year's ginger crop. The region, often referred to as the "home of ginger," has developed a thriving industry around two distinctive local varieties: small, yellow ginger and large, fleshy ginger.

Favorable weather has boosted yields this season. "The rainfall and sunshine were well-balanced—it's been a very good year for ginger," shared one farmer during a break near Futang Town. Most of the harvest is sold fresh, while the rest is processed into powder, sliced, or even used in ginger-filled pillows. About 95% of the yield reaches consumers across China, thanks to cooperatives and commercial distributors.
In 2025, Lianshan's ginger fields covered approximately 2,520 acres, producing around 34,000 tonnes. The large fleshy ginger, known locally as "spicy taro," is valued for its mild heat and rich aroma, making it popular in cities such as Guangzhou, Hong Kong, and Macao.

The ginger sector now generates more than ¥100 million in primary production value, with its total economic impact estimated at ¥132 million. The government aims to further develop ginger-based products and strengthen industry linkages, hoping this local specialty continues to drive rural revitalization.
