Guangdong's pomelo gains global footprint as exports surge

Pomelos from Meizhou in Guangdong are reaching international markets with exports rising significantly this year. From January to October 2025, the city shipped 2,326.5 metric tons of pomelos, an increase of 52.9% compared to the same period last year.

Customs officials recently inspected a 16-ton shipment at a local packing facility, checking for pests and diseases before clearance. The company has exported about 800 tons of pomelos this year to markets including New Zealand and the Middle East.

To support the industry, Meizhou Customs has introduced measures such as streamlining procedures and hosting policy briefings. The agency now oversees 15 registered orchards and 10 packing plants, covering approximately 1,812 acres of cultivation land. "We want every exported pomelo to be a fruit that buyers can trust," said Pan Wanglei, head of the customs inspection team. Officers guide farmers on the use of pesticides, fertilizers, and pest control, helping them build traceable quality management systems.

Meizhou's natural conditions, ample sunlight, fertile soil, and clean water, contribute to the fruit's balanced sweet-tart flavor. The customs team has also set up a "green channel" for fresh produce, speeding up inspections and reducing delays.

While pomelos have long been popular in China, growing demand from Europe, Southeast Asia, and North America is encouraging local growers to expand their markets.
