Guangdong cross-regional trips exceed 1.16 bln during 2026 Spring Festival travel rush

During the 2026 Spring Festival travel rush (Feb 2-Mar 13), Guangdong recorded 1.162 billion cross-regional passenger trips, averaging 29.05 million per day, up 4.52% year on year, with multiple transport indicators hitting historic highs. This reflects the economic vitality of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

Railways recorded 56.68 million passenger trips, up 11.1%. Among them, provincially operated intercity railways carried 4.40 million passengers, surging 22.83%, the highest during the Spring Festival holiday in history. On Feb 13, railway departures across the province exceeded 2.04 million passengers, setting a new Spring Festival travel record.

Waterway transport carried 5.53 million passengers, up 0.89%. On Feb 20, the Pearl River Cruise passenger volume hit 45,400, a record high. On Feb 24, the Qiongzhou Strait ferry service handled 42,079 vehicles entering and leaving Hainan Province, breaking the historical record.

Civil aviation handled 11.54 million passengers, up 8.38%. On Feb 23, passenger throughput reached 286,400 at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport and 215,800 at Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport, both record highs. Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport handled 10.19 million passengers in total, becoming the first airport in China to surpass 10 million passengers during the Spring Festival travel rush.

During this period, highway travel reached 1.088 billion passenger trips, up 4.14%. Expressways across the province recorded about 310 million vehicle trips, averaging 7.75 million vehicles per day, up 4.25% year on year. The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge saw 674,400 vehicle trips, up 21.24%, with a peak of 29,500 vehicles on Feb 21, a new record.
