Guangzhou will conduct a citywide test of its air-raid warning system on September 19. The routine test is not in response to an actual emergency, so residents and visitors need not be alarmed when the sirens sound.
According to a notice issued by the People's Government of Guangzhou Municipality, the test will take place across the city from 10:20 a.m. to 10:43 a.m.
The three types of warning signals will sound at the following times:
10:20–10:23 a.m.: Advance warning
10:30–10:33 a.m.: Air-raid warning
10:40–10:43 a.m.: All-clear signal
The signals will follow the prescribed patterns:
Advance warning: A 36-second siren followed by a 24-second pause, repeated three times over three minutes.
Air-raid warning: A six-second siren followed by a six-second pause, repeated 15 times over three minutes.
All-clear signal: A continuous siren for three minutes.
How will the test be conducted?
The warning signals will be sounded simultaneously through fixed sirens across the city, mobile air-raid warning vehicles and selected multimedia air defense and disaster warning systems.
The signals will also be broadcast on Guangzhou Broadcasting Network's general channel and three radio channels: FM96.2 MHz (news), FM102.7 MHz (music) and FM106.1 MHz (economy and traffic). Guangzhou Metro TV will carry the signals as well.
Local branches of China Telecom, China Mobile and China Unicom will also provide information about the test through text messages, WeChat, Weibo and other platforms in due course.
Industrial production, daily life and social activities across Guangzhou will continue as normal during the test. Some communities, government offices and schools will conduct civil defense exercises, including evacuation and shelter drills and exercises simulating responses to the aftermath of an air raid.
