HK LegCo's first seminar explores synergistic development with Nansha

The Legislative Council (LegCo) of Hong Kong convened the Special Seminar on Nansha's 15th Five-Year Plan on February 6.

This marked the first thematic seminar held by the 8th Legislative Council of Hong Kong since its establishment. A delegation from Guangzhou's Nansha District attended the meeting in Hong Kong. Legislative Council President Starry Lee Wai-king noted that the new council, with its broad representation, has a responsibility to support the HKSAR government in aligning with the national 15th Five-Year Plan and integrating into the country's overall development. Leading the visiting delegation, Liu Wei, a member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Guangzhou Municipal Committee and Secretary of the CPC Nansha District Committee, stated that Nansha will continue to leverage its strengths to facilitate Hong Kong's deeper integration into national development.

Notably, John Lee Ka-chiu, chief executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, explicitly designated Nansha as Hong Kong's key base for strengthening Guangdong-Hong Kong sci-tech innovation cooperation for the first time in his 2025 Policy Address. At this seminar, several Legislative Council members put forward specific cooperation proposals, including establishing a large comprehensive hospital in Nansha District to serve Hong Kong residents based on the model of Hong Kong's public hospitals, jointly building a regulatory sandbox for the low-altitude economy, and promoting the clustered development of the biopharmaceutical industry.

Participants expressed that as Hong Kong formulates its first local five-year plan and sets up an inter-departmental task force to align with the national 15th Five-Year Plan, the consensus reached at this seminar will provide a pragmatic path for the synergistic development of Guangdong and Hong Kong.
