The third session of the 14th Guangdong Provincial People's Congress kicked off in Guangzhou on the morning of January 15. Governor Wang Weizhong delivered the Government Work Report at the opening ceremony.
He pointed out that Guangdong has successfully held a series of global events in 2024, such as the Teochew International Convention & The World Chaoshan Entrepreneurs Convention (two conventions), the Forum on China-Africa Local Government Cooperation, and Airshow China, which showcase the development of Guangdong to the world.
During the conference, the city of Shantou held its Open Day in the afternoon on the same day.

"The Teochew International Convention & the World Chaoshan Entrepreneurs Convention in 2024 is the largest one historically, which provides a platform for Chaoshan's people worldwide to seek cooperation and reunion," said Wen Zhanbin, Deputy to the Guangdong Provincial People's Congress, as well as Party Chief of the CPC Shantou Municipal Committee.
Wen stated that during the preparation for the "Two Conventions," Shantou Railway Station was built, which allowed high-speed trains to access the city center of Shantou .
"A total of 88 projects worth 100 billion yuan have started or finished during the period of the 'Two Conventions,' indicating that modernization and industrial transformation of Shantou have reached a new level," said Wen.
Furthermore, Over 60 projects worth over 60 billion yuan were signed during the period of the "Two Conventions."
"The content of the Government Work Report highlights the importance of eastern Guangdong, western Guangdong, and northern Guangdong, especially mentioning Shantou in many places, like promoting the development of Shantou's harbor economic area and supporting Shantou to build a large-scale theme park," said Chen Tao, deputy to Guangdong Provincial People's Congress, Mayor of Shantou.
According to Chen, some big enterprises, such as Alibaba and Shein, have set up their branches in Shantou because of its developed express delivery industry (8th in China). Furthermore, Shantou has built two parks for its competitive industries, which are textiles and toys.
"Shantou Textile Park and Shantou Toy Park are now in service. More than 1,000 enterprises have settled down in the Textile Park, while nearly 300 companies have moved into the Toy Park," said Chen.
Chen introduced that Shantou will focus on establishing connections with the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area by building three more high-speed railways. "We will build a one-hour life circle with the cities in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area," Chen added.
