South China Sea fishing moratorium begins May 1

Starting at 12:00 PM on May 1, 2025, Guangdong Province will enforce its annual summer fishing moratorium in the South China Sea, lasting until August 16.

This ban applies to all fishing operations, except for those using fishing rods, within the waters under Guangdong's jurisdiction between 12°N latitude and the Fujian-Guangdong maritime boundary, including the Beibu Gulf. All auxiliary vessels supporting fishing activities are also required to cease operations during this period.

In Maoming, a total of 2,444 fishing vessels are returning to port to comply with the moratorium. These vessels are mandated to dock in designated areas such as Bohe Bay, Shuidong Bay, Jida Bay, or the Liaoqian Sea anchorage. Vessels unable to berth in these locations must be hauled ashore or towed to land-based storage, as organized by local town or village authorities.

Violations of the moratorium will be subject to penalties under the Fisheries Law of the People's Republic of China, as enforced by the agricultural and marine authorities.

Maoming's marine enforcement division has established a 24-hour hotline at 0668-2876608 for the public to report any suspected illegal fishing activities.
